Outdoor LED lights went from €80 to €8 in ten years. The result: a market flooded with models that die after 18 months, with falsely declared IP ratings, that change color after a single summer. This collection includes only lights selected to genuinely last — minimum IP44, replaceable drivers, real manufacturer warranties.

What you'll find in this collection

Over 53 LED lights for outdoor use: recessed floor and wall spotlights, wall-mounted sconces, path lanterns, rechargeable table lamps, facade floodlights, PIR sensor spotlights, outdoor bathroom lights.

The IP rating: the number that really matters

What IPxx means

First digit = protection against solid objects (dust). Second = protection against water.

IP44

Resistant to water splashes from any direction. Sufficient for sconces under an overhang, lights in areas not exposed to driving rain.

IP54-IP55

Resistant to water jets. For lights on exposed walls, perimeter spotlights.

IP65

Resistant to powerful jets. Required for lights in contact with the ground, recessed floor spotlights, pool edge lighting.

IP66-IP67-IP68

Resistant to temporary or permanent submersion. For underwater lights, fountain lighting.

Color temperature: the choice that sets the mood

2700K (warm)

Golden light, similar to old incandescent bulbs. Relaxing atmosphere, perfect for dining and lounge areas. Mimics candlelight.

3000K (warm neutral)

A balance between warmth and visibility. Good for functional areas (above the barbecue, near entrances).

4000K (neutral)

Natural white light. For perimeter security, PIR sensor lights, technical lighting.

5000K+ (cool)

Not recommended for occupied outdoor areas. Creates a "construction site" or "clinical" atmosphere. Suitable only for industrial technical lighting.

Lumens: how much light do you actually need

Path / walkway

100–200 lumens every 2–3 metres of path.

Sconce near front door

400–600 lumens total.

Facade floodlight

800–1500 lumens for an average surface.

Spotlight to illuminate a 4 m tall tree

600–800 lumens, positioned at the base angled at 45°.

Perimeter security with sensor

500–800 lumens per point, activating only when motion is detected.

Real running costs

A 10W LED spotlight for 5 hours/day

0.05 kWh/day → 18 kWh/year → €5–6 per year at the average Italian tariff.

Comparison with old halogen lights

A 50W halogen (equivalent lumens to a 10W LED) costs 90 kWh/year → €27–30/year. Difference: €22–24/year per light.

Return on investment

Replacing 10 halogens with LEDs costs €100–200 but pays for itself in 12–18 months.

Drivers and real lifespan

What fails first in LEDs

Not the LEDs themselves (they last 30,000–50,000 hours). What fails is the electronic driver — the small module that converts the current. Cheap drivers last 2–3 years.

What to look for

Replaceable drivers (modular lights) or quality drivers (Mean Well, Philips, Osram). Minimum 2-year manufacturer warranty that's real, not just stated.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install IP44 lights in the garden?

Only if under a roof or canopy. For direct exposure to driving rain, at least IP54-IP55 is required. For recessed floor spotlights: IP65.

Do lights attract insects and mosquitoes?

Yes, it depends on the color temperature. Warm LEDs at 2700–3000K attract 70% fewer insects than fluorescents or cool LEDs. For occupied outdoor areas: amber LED 2200K where possible.

What does CRI mean?

Color Rendering Index: a measure of how accurately colors are rendered. CRI 80+ is standard. CRI 90+ renders colors more naturally (important above dining areas to prevent food from looking grey).

How much do LEDs save compared to old bulbs?

75–85% less energy consumption at the same lumen output. A full replacement of a garden with 10 halogen lights pays for itself in 12–18 months.

Can I use indoor lights outdoors?

Never. Even under an enclosed porch, air humidity damages unprotected electronic components. Indoor lights have no declared IP rating and will fail within 6–12 months.
