Two seasons or ten: the difference is here. Most outdoor cushions sold in Italy last 2–3 summers before fading, flattening and giving out. Ours are selected to last at least three times longer. This collection features over 20 products including seat cushions, sun lounger mattresses, waterproof furniture covers and technical textiles for intensive outdoor use.
What you'll find in this collection
Dining chair cushions, back cushions and lounge sofa mattresses, decorative cushions (lumbar, square, long), covers for tables, chairs, lounge sets, parasols and barbecues. Fabrics: solution-dyed acrylic, high-density polyester, Textilene.
Outdoor seat cushions
Density matters
Look for a minimum density of 35 kg/m³ — below that the cushion flattens on first use and loses shape within months. 45+ kg/m³ for intensive daily use (lounge sets, main sofas).
Minimum thickness
8 cm for seats, 10 cm for backs, 12 cm for sun lounger mattresses. Below these thresholds, comfort is poor and lifespan is halved.
Outer fabric
Solution-dyed acrylic (Sunbrella, Olefin): pigment locked inside the fibre, 8–10 year colour retention. UV-coated 300+ g/m² polyester: market standard, 4–5 year lifespan. Treated cotton: top aesthetics but fades in 2–3 seasons.
Zips and covers
YKK or equivalent zips (last 10+ years). Removable covers machine-washable at 30°C on a delicate cycle.
Waterproof furniture covers
Material
High-density 180+ g/m² polyester with PU (polyurethane) coating. Never PVC without breathability (produces mould within 3 weeks). Never cheap plastic sheeting.
Seams
Double + heat-sealed. Rain gets in through poorly made seams, not through the fabric.
Ventilation
Ventilation vents are essential, plus tie-down cords under the furniture. Without ventilation: mould is guaranteed even with breathable fabric.
Right fit
10 cm larger than the furniture in every direction. Too wide and they act as sails in the wind; too narrow and water gets in from the sides.
How to coordinate colours and patterns
The 60-30-10 rule
60% dominant colour (large cushions, mattresses): choose a neutral that will hold up for 5+ years. 30% secondary colour (medium cushions, rugs): be bold here — it'll change in 2–3 years. 10% accent (lumbar cushions, throws): refresh every season.
Patterns and prints
Maximum two prints in the same space. One large and one small — never two with the same visual weight. Large stripes and geometrics → solid secondary tones. Florals → neutral textures.
Maintenance that makes them last for years
Weekly
Quick brush to remove leaves, dust and pollen.
Monthly
Quick rinse with a hose, check seams and zips.
Seasonal
Full clean with mild soap, dry completely in indirect sunlight.
Winter storage
Always store indoors or in a garden shed. Never in sealed plastic bags (they suffocate the filling and cause mould). Use breathable cotton or non-woven fabric bags.
The difference between "outdoor" and "indoor" cushions
Filling
Outdoor: water-repellent filling that dries quickly after rain. Indoor: wadding or down that absorbs water and grows mould.
Fabric
Outdoor: UV-resistant, water-repellent, chlorine-resistant (near pools). Indoor: aesthetic use only.
Seams
Outdoor: Tenara technical thread or equivalent, UV-resistant. Indoor: cotton thread that rots in the rain.
Practical upshot
Never use indoor cushions outside, not even under a porch. Within 6 months they'll be unusable.
Frequently asked questions
Can I machine-wash outdoor cushions?
Only removable covers with a label that permits it. 30°C cycle, 400 rpm spin. Never put the filling in the washing machine.
What do I do if the cushions get wet in the rain?
Outdoor fillings dry in 24–48 hours in the sun. If they stay damp inside closed covers they will go mouldy. Always open the zips to let the inside dry out too.
How long does a waterproof cover last?
Budget covers: 1–2 winters. Quality covers (180+ g/m² PU-coated polyester, heat-sealed seams): 5–7 years.
How do I clean a mould stain?
Bicarbonate of soda mixed into a paste with warm water. Apply with a soft brush, leave for 15 minutes, rinse off. Never bleach (it destroys the water-repellent treatment and the dyes).
Do I need to re-apply water repellent every year?
Quality cushions: a water-repellent spray once a year for exposed parasols. Covers: a silicone refresh every 2–3 years.
