Replacement Awning Fabric, PU Coated Polyester, 4x3 m, Anthracite
A 4-square-metre balcony isn't a compromise — it's a creative constraint. The wrong awning turns it into a dark tunnel. The right one doubles your usable space, making it feel like a true outdoor room. This collection features over 128 models — arm awnings, drop awnings, vertical sun shades, sail shades, and canopies — for every orientation and size of balcony, terrace, or garden.
What you'll find in this collection
Retractable arm awnings, vertical drop awnings (Venetian style), lateral roller sun shades, triangular and trapezoidal sail shades, wall-mounted canopies, fixed hood canopies. Widths from 1.5 to 6 m, projections from 1 to 4 m.
Retractable arm awning
The Italian classic
Opens horizontally on spring-loaded arms. Widths 1.5–4 m, projection 1.5–3 m. Folded depth 18–25 cm. Best coverage against high overhead sun.
Prices and lifespan
€200–1,500. Motorised models 30–50% more. Structural lifespan 10–15 years if retracted correctly in windy conditions.
When NOT to choose it
Balconies narrower than 2 m (visual disproportion). Non-load-bearing walls (pull-out risk). HOA restrictions on façade projection.
Vertical drop awning
For low sun and privacy
Rolls down from above and hangs vertically. Folded depth 12–15 cm beneath the railing. Ideal against low afternoon sun (west-facing balconies) and for blocking neighbours' sightlines.
Prices and coverage
€80–300. Effective only when sun arrives at an angle — not at midday when it's directly overhead.
Lateral roller sun shade (shading screen)
For dividing adjacent terraces
Micro-perforated fabric mounted on a side roller. Pulls across like a screen. 7–10 cm cassette on one side. Works as a visual and thermal divider between neighbouring balconies.
Prices
€150–500. Micro-perforated fabric lets air through while blocking 80–90% of UV.
Sail shade
Maximum style, wind awareness required
Fabric tensioned between 3–4 anchor points. Triangular, rhombus, or trapezoidal shapes. Removable and storable (5×40 cm rolled up).
Prices and limitations
€60–250 for standard sizes. Wind above 40 km/h = the sail takes off. Retract or remove before heavy storms.
Which model for which orientation
East-facing balcony
Morning sun, low angle. Vertical drop awning or lateral roller shade. Minimal bulk — you only need cover for 3–4 hours.
South-facing balcony
Overhead sun all day. Arm awning with a minimum 2-metre projection. Below that, you'll still be in direct sun at midday even with the awning open.
West-facing balcony
Intense low afternoon sun. Drop awning is the go-to solution. If HOA rules restrict external wall fixtures: retractable lateral roller shade.
North-facing balcony
Sun only in June–July at peak hours. A side parasol or removable sail shade is sufficient.
HOA restrictions to check BEFORE you buy
Mandatory colour
Many buildings have resolutions requiring a "uniform awning colour". Almost always cream or dark brown in historic centres.
Maximum projection
Often 1.2 m by regulation. A 2.5 m arm awning would be non-compliant.
Wall drilling
Protected façades (historic centres, listed buildings): may require a building notice or municipal authorisation.
Distance from neighbours
Civil code: 75 cm from the boundary if the awning is openable. Sail shades stretching to a neighbouring balcony are almost always unlawful.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install an arm awning myself?
Under 2 m wide — yes, if you have a hammer drill and the right wall plugs. Wider: always use a professional installer. A pull-out from the wall means costly structural damage.
How much fabric do I need to cover 4 m²?
A 2.5×2 m arm awning covers roughly 5 m² at a good pitch. For narrow balconies (1.5 m wide): two drop awnings on different sides work better than one large arm awning.
Are motorised awnings worth the extra cost?
Only if you use them more than 100 times a year. Below that frequency, manual crank models are more reliable and last twice as long.
What happens if it rains while the awning is open?
Modern fabrics handle light rain but hold water. Above 5 mm/h: retract it. Automatic wind+rain sensors (€80–150 extra) prevent disasters when you're not home.
Drop awning or sail shade — which makes the balcony feel smaller?
The sail. It creates a visual "ceiling" that lowers the space. A drop awning, being on the side, leaves the sky open above and makes the balcony feel larger.
