Centre-pole parasols

If your table has a centre hole

The centre-pole parasol is the classic choice and the most stable. It slots through the centre of your table and, with a base of 20–25 kg per metre of diameter, holds firm in winds up to 30 km/h. Diameters run from 2 to 4 metres — a 2.5 m covers a 4-seater table, a 3 m covers a 6-seater, and a 3.5 m suits lounge areas.

Frame materials

Anodised aluminium: lightweight, zero maintenance, 15+ year lifespan. Wood (FSC eucalyptus or acacia): warmer aesthetically, needs oiling every 12 months. Steel: budget-friendly but heavier and prone to corrosion over time.

Cantilever (side) parasols

When you want clear space underneath

A cantilever parasol frees up the entire central area — ideal for lounge sofa zones, hot tubs and long dining tables. It requires a heavier base (50–70 kg minimum) and clearance above. 360° rotating models let you track the afternoon sun without moving the base.

When NOT to choose a cantilever

On balconies under 5 m², the canopy arm creates visual bulk. A drop awning or fixed wall-mounted parasol is a better fit.

Garden gazebos

Permanent or semi-permanent structures

Gazebos sized from 3×3 to 4×6 m are the answer for anyone who wants a reliable "roof" for frequent outdoor dining. Options include aluminium frames with removable side panels, bioclimatic gazebos with adjustable louvres, and classic timber models with bituminous tile roofing.

Planning permission

Under 6 m² and without foundations, almost always permit-free. Above that: a building notice (SCIA) is required. In protected areas (historic centres, landscape zones): check with your building management or local council before purchasing.

Fabrics: the detail that determines lifespan

Polyester 180–220 g/m²

The market standard. Lasts 2–3 seasons with heavy use. A good choice for parasols in partly shaded spots or if you like changing the look regularly.

Solution-dyed acrylic (Sunbrella, Olefin)

The pigment is inside the fibre, not on top. Colour holds for 8–10 years. Higher upfront cost, offset by triple the usable lifespan.

UPF rating

Look for UPF 50+ printed on the label. Below this threshold, even an oversized parasol won't truly protect against sunburn during peak hours.

A parasol with solution-dyed acrylic fabric and an aluminium frame lasts 8–10 years if closed when it's windy and stored indoors over winter. Budget polyester models last 2–3 seasons.

Which base should I choose?

For centre-pole: 20–25 kg per metre of diameter. For cantilever: 50 kg up to 2.5 m, 70 kg above. Materials: granite (attractive but brittle), concrete (sturdy and affordable), fillable plastic (practical but unstable when empty).

Should I close the parasol when it rains?

Yes. Even waterproof fabrics retain water: the weight can distort arms and seams. Close it whenever rainfall exceeds 5 mm/h. Same rule applies below 30 km/h wind.

Which gazebo for areas with snowfall?

Reinforced aluminium frames with a pitched double-slope roof, rated for a minimum snow load of 30 kg/m². Below the Alps: all standard models work. Above 800 m: mountain-specific models only.

Can I leave the parasol open all summer?
